Crochet coral reef that is!

The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project is a collaborative fiber art exhibition started by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute for Figuring in Los Angeles, CA. Its mission is to raise public awareness about the plight of the world’s coral reefs from over-fishing, pollution and global warming through the tactile pleasures of handicraft. As part of the exhibition, the local crochet community had the opportunity to build a “satellite reef” throughout the summer at several local yarn shops, including fibre space™. The reef was on display in our front window for several weeks and even featured one of our "ladies" swimming happily through the coral.

As of this week, the coral reef is now on exhibit at the Sant Ocean Hall in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Each local fiber artist is credited in the exhibition individually!

Want to try your hand?

Even though the installation is complete, you can still find your own inspiration at the Institute For Figuring’s Gallery of Crocheted Models. Pick up a hook and get started!
